5-HTP stands for 5-Hydroxytryptophan, or also known as oxytriptan.
It is an amino acid and is a precursor to serotonin, being very effective in increasing levels of this neurotransmitter.
What does 5-HTP do?
Taking into account that the working mechanism of 5-HTP is simply based on the increase in serotonin, it is important to know the role of this neurotransmitter and what its functions are.
Serotonin is responsible for regulating various functions in the body, from sleep to appetite and well-being.
Low serotonin levels are associated with depression, insomnia and so-called “cravings”, that is, the desire to eat sweets.
5-HTP works by increasing this neurotransmitter, making it a useful tool in weight loss diets as it promotes satiety and makes it easier to control the foods you consume.
Furthermore, low-calorie diets are associated with mood swings and sometimes difficulties in falling asleep, this supplement, by promoting an increase in serotonin levels, can maintain a more stable mood and a feeling of relaxation that can help combat insomnia and a general well-being.
How is 5-HTP taken?
The ideal would be to start 5-HTP on an empty stomach before bed with a dose of 100mg that can be increased up to 200mg.
Another method of use is to spread the doses throughout the day up to three times to control appetite, however, this method may make you drowsy.
Note. It is normal to have more intense dreams while taking 5-HTP as this supplement makes your sleep deeper.
