Interview Filipe Martins

Filipe Martins is an athlete in the Men's Physique category who started competing this year and is already giving a talk.

In addition to the excellent results a nível nacional, foi recentemente ao Mr Olympia em Liverpool arrecadar a segunda posição.

How and why did you start training?

I started training around the age of 18, the beginning was a bit strange because he was a very thin boy and weighed around 45/50 kg.

I started training basically because I didn’t feel good about myself, and I didn’t feel good because the guys at the time always tended to tease me, because I was very rebellious and always had a ready answer, and after some fears or bad luck of night life, I decided that I wanted to get into a martial art, and consequently to a gymnasium.

I started practicing Muay Thai until my taste for the gym and the lack of time made me choose what I liked best.

What made you want to compete?

I've always been a sports lover, I've always played 11-a-side football and I've always enjoyed challenging myself. My taste for the gym and fitness was increasing, along with my physical form that thankfully was accompanying me.

I have also closely followed the path of foreign fitness athletes, but also some Portuguese, such as Ricardo Correia, Francisco Macau, Rui Pedro Batista and Tierry Vilson, who for me are influential people in the sport.

The taste grew until last year I was present at the Power Expo in Maia and I really decided that I wanted to belong to that world, that stage and live that experience that made me so ecstatic even when I was out.

What kind of food do you follow?

My diet throughout the year, whether in the bulk phase or in the pre-competition phase, is always as clean as possible. In other words, there are rare times when I leave the diet, except on the supposed day of the garbage, to try to obtain the highest yield in quality possible.

Eu pessoalmente tenho alguma dificuldade em ganhos de peso, pois como acabei de referir a minha dieta é muito restrita para evitar ao máximo o ganho de percentagens de fat elevadas, que só me dificultariam no processo de pré competição.

What kind of training do you follow?

I basically follow an adaptation training, and I say adaptation because thank God I was lucky to be accompanied by a professional, who besides my PT, my master and my friend, is also a very attentive professional.

In other words, my training comes in phases, phases that our body goes through for a whole year, with ups and downs obviously, and which aims to get around the breaks that our body gives.

We usually work with repetitions 15, but I myself am not an apologist for using the same type of training for a long time, because our bodies stop assimilating so easily when we get too used to a routine.

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation comes mainly from me, to try to be useful in something, to be proud of myself in something, but also a lot of those who accompany me, my family, friends, my girlfriend and my master who never gives up. me not for a second.

They are examples of motivation that I focus on, because when you feel that there is someone who trusts you even for a second, who loses even an hour to see you go up on a stage, and who tells you when you need more that you are proud in you, there is no better feeling in the world, so this is part of my motivation.

But obviously to follow for example the current Mr Olympia Jeremy Buendia it's a motivation in itself, and of course I'm an attentive follower.

What supplements do you use?

Since I started competing, I always use the same supplement brand, which is Biotech USA.

Then, I use several supplements, from vitamins to proteins and muscle recuperators.

Any tips in particular for those just starting out?

Yes, I have some.

1º - Never be in a hurry.

I say this because nowadays there is a lot of people who train, or those who start training, and think that the results appear from one day to the next. In reality it is not so, things come from work, sweat, sacrifice and dedication!

2º - As the best ever Arnold says: “Never be afraid to fail”.

Because if you commit or commit to something for fear of failing, falling and not getting up, things don't work out, so you should never be afraid of failing.

3º Always believe in ourselves and try, because it is better to die trying, than to die thinking that we should have tried but not tried.

Goals for the future, what are they?

My future goals are to give some importance to international competition for now, I hope I can have a 2016 year much better than this one.

I clearly hope to achieve the maximum exponent of the competition and consequently the said PRO Card.

Finally, I hope that my work and dedication will be valued in the best way.
